| One Story Selection is "Wilbur's Boast" just a piece of E.B. White's Charlotte's Web |

| The class begins reading a new selection on the first day of each week. At the end of the week, every Friday, there is a short test to review the story, vocabulary words and assess your child's comprehension.
With each story your child will learn a set of new vocabulary terms, practice phonics and grammar that go along with the story topic, and will participate in several individual as well as group activities to reinforce learning and improve comprehension.
Your child will also have time to read books of their choice and take assessments using Accelerated Reader throughout the year to earn points towards prizes at the end of each quarter. This is a great program to improve fluency!
Your child is encouraged to read for 15 minutes every night, your support is appreciated!

We begin each week with a new list of spelling words which the class will be tested over every Friday. The list is made up of 20 words. The list can be found on the front of your child's spelling unit that is handed out on the first day of the week! This is your child's primary and only list.
During class we will go over these words together to learn their spelling and meaning.
Your child will be expected to write these words in cursive every week for homework.

The spelling unit your child receives will reinforce the spelling words as well as the vocabulary words used in the story for that week. At the beginning of the week the class will go over these pages so your child knows what pages to complete. Your child will be responsible for having the pages of this unit completed and turned in every Friday morning. They may need to complete some of these pages at home but they will also have plenty of time to complete most of the unit during class.
I encourage your child to review these words at home so they are well prepared for their Friday test, your support with this is appreciated!

| The math concepts that will be covered this year include: time, money, addition, subtraction,multiplication, division, geometric shapes and figures, and angles.
Your child will be learn with partners, through direct instruction, with hands-on activities and learning centers, as well as with individual assessments.
Please help accelerate your child's math skills by using flash cards with them and/or helping them with any corrections they need to complete!

| At the beginning of the year we learn about each part of a plant and it's function. We observe and record plant growth by growing our own plants in class. |

| Cookie Mining is a fantastic way to help students learn about our natural resources and how mining for these resources affects the land! |
|

| The class learns about different animals, their habitats, and what they need to survive. Then we compare an animal's needs to our own. |

| Social Studies/Our History |

| The class begins learning about Henry Ford's new Model T and assembly lines. The students learn how each person has a specific job and must complete it properly for an excellent finish product. At the end of this unit the class has the opportunity to design and create in an assembly line manner their own shoe. It shows how creative your child can really be! |

We learn about the many inventions of Benjamin Franklin and how he helped shape our society today. It is exciting to learn that Mr. Franklin began the first volunteer fire department and lending library! Some of his other inventions are the Franklin "wood burning" Stove, Bifocals, and the armonica. We also learn about Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and several other important figures throughout history.

The class spends time learning how the English first settled in America. We explore English settlers John Smith and John Rolfe, and the Powhatan Indians and Pocahantas. We learn how they survived the hardships they faced and prospered in the "new land".

| The class enjoyed a field trip to the Sci-Tech Museum in Aurora, IL. While there the students learned about electricity and magnets in a hands-on demonstration/class. Then they were able to explore the exhibits throughout the museum. |

| The students also visited the Rialto Theatre. During this field trip we enjoyed a science show about chemical changes and reactions. |

| As a class we went to the Adler Planetarium to learn about the solar system. The class enjoyed a show about the planets and constellations while there along with all the wonderful exhibits. |

| At the Joliet Historical Museum we learned what is was like to be a fire fighter |

| At our trip to the Joliet Historical Museum our class was able to compare and contrast the games children used in the past to those played by children now. They also created a game of their own to take home and enjoy! |
